Here is a step by step installation guide to install Kali Linux on virtualbox.

1. Download and install VirtualBox from here and also download Kali Linux ISO from here.

2. Now open VirtualBox and click on new to create a new virtual machine.

3. Write the name of your virtual machine, folder in which you want it stored, type of OS you want to install on it and version of that OS. In the list of versions, you wont find Kali Linux so select Other Linux as in the image below.

4. Then specify the memory size of your virtual machine. I recommend that you should specify half of the memory that you have on your machine now. This will make 8GB of RAM so I specify 4GB to this virtual machine.

5. Then you have to create a virtual hard disk for our Linux OS to install on.

6. Then hard disk type.

7. Then select Dynamically Allocated for storage.

8. Then specify the name and size of the hard disk and click on create.

9. Now that your virtual machine is created you will have to select the Kali Linux ISO to boot on to the installation menu. To do that you have to go on the settings of the your virtual machine that you just created and then navigate to Storage tab and the select the empty disk that is shown as in the image below and from there you can browse your ISO file.

10. Then you have to start your virtual machine.

11. After booting up you will see Kali Linux Boot Menu and there you have to select Graphical Install.

12. Then you have to select the language, location and keyboard keymap. Keep the defaults if you don’t know what to select. YOu can change them afterwords.

13. Then set the hostname. This is the name which your system will be identified on network. And then if you want you can specify any Domain Name that you have. Best keep it blank and continue.

14. Here you will have to create a root password which will be used to get root access.

15. Then you have to do disk partitioning. Here select Guided - use entire disk option and continue.

16. And then select the disk you want to make partitions on. It will show that one virtual disk which we created in step 8.

17. And then select All files in one partition option. You can have separate partition for home, var and tmp folders. If you dont know what to do then go for All files in one partition.

18. Now you will see all the partitions which are made automatically and then select Finish partitioning and continue.

19. Then verify your partitions and select Yes. If you want changes then select No.

20. Now the installation will start.

21. Now after that we are not going to use any package mirrors so select No and continue.

22. Now we are going to install GRUB boot loader which is required to boot into kali linux, so select Yes.

23. And the select the virtual hard disk to install GRUB onto.

24. Now, once the installation is finished then click om continue and then the system will reboot.

25. Then once it is booted into Kali Linux system then you will see a sign in screen. Now we have not yet created any user so you just have to write root as username and in password box you have to write the root password that we create in step 14.

26. And you have your Kali Linux running on VirtualBox.
