What is file system?



A file system is a way with which file are named and are logically placed for storage and retrieval purposes. We can say that it is a process in which managing, storing and retrieving of data on a disk is managed.

Typical File System Operations
A File System operations are naming file, meta-data, storage management, directories/folders, access rules and privileges.

File Systems
NTFS
NTFS or New Technology File System is a proprietary file system developed by Microsoft.

FAT32
FAT of File Allocation Table is a computer file system architecture and a family of industry-standard file system utilizing it. To over come size limit of FAT16, Microsoft introduced FAT32.

HFS
HFS or Hierarchical File System is a proprietary file system developed by Apple for use in computer system running Mac OS.

EXT4
EXT4 or Fourth Extended File System is a journaling file system for Linux developed as the successor to EXT3.
